To me, this photo represents documentary photography in its finest form. There is an element of factual documentation, recording the happenings of an event, in this case a boxing workshop in Cambodia attended by men of all ages and nationalities. It is not posed, things are happening in real time, some poses are in action, some are clearly casual and unplanned. However, as with the best of all photography, there is another dimension of emotion, or a larger social story with room for interpretation. The older men fighting in the foreground frame the two younger boxers at the center, like an echo from the future or the past. Both artistic and informative, this is undoubtedly a successful documentary photograph.
