France. Paris, 1978. Intermission in the old classical Paris
Opera House
Credit: Burt Glinn
This image, as the caption explains, was taken in 1978 in
Paris. The photograph shows the hubbub that took place during the intermission
of a performance in the Paris Opera House. This image, which seems to have been
taken from one of the balconies of the second floor, vividly shows off the
amazing architecture of the building as well as the people within it. The
archways and columns of the building are shown in vivid detail, illuminated by
the glowing lights spread about. Many of the people in the photograph are
blurry, indicating their movement at the time the photograph was taken. It is
clear by this that there is some action happening, that these people had places
to get to, in this case either their seats for the performance or refreshments
before the performance began again. To me this is a rather romantic sort of
picture; it is a beautiful example of life, of the beauty of the historic
building mixing with the (then) modern lifestyle of the people.
