Magnum Photo: FRANCE. Paris. January 2003. Dior fashion show.

Title: FRANCE. Paris. January 2003. Dior fashion show.

Creator: Gueorgui Pinkhassov

The main focus of the photograph is a woman in an avant garde garment, hair, and make-up.  The woman stares directly at the photographer, and appears somewhat bored.  She is surrounded by at least 6 other people, most of whom appear to be doing some kind of work on the garment she is wearing.  None of them are making eye contact with the photographer, and only one of their faces is fully visible.  Some are wearing very plain, casual clothing while others opt for bolder garments.  They all appear to be very focused on the task that they are performing.  What appears to be a garment rack cuts through the right side of the photograph and one of the people is using it to brace themselves. The background is rather plain - greyish worn walls and what appears to be some kind of railing in the top left of the photograph.

Given the evidence, and the title, it can be assumed that the woman in the avant garde garment is a model at a fashion show and the people around her are hired help for the designer.  The location appears to be backstage at the show, but it would be difficult to deduce that it was in Paris without the title.  The time period (January 2003) would also be difficult to place without the title or knowing which designer's collection the garment is from.  I would have guessed sometime in the 2000's based on the clothing the assistants are wearing.  The designer is Dior, though the only way the designer is identifiable is through the title (or again, if the person examining the photograph recognized the garment.)  This may be occurring before the show has started, in the middle of a show during a costume change, or after the show - there aren't enough clues in the image or the title to say with certainty.
